Lucasfilm Ditches Paper Holiday Cards For Animated ‘Star Wars’ Droids

Via Cnet.com:

In this animated holiday card from Lucasfilm, everyone’s favorite astromech R2-D2 not only constructs the ideal geeky paper snowflake, he rolls aside to let the newest droid from the “Star Wars Rebels” animated series — a C1-10P nicknamed Chopper — try his “hand” cutting paper to make impressive snowflakes.

The animated card begins by showing the beloved Yoda statue, who is wearing a Santa hat. The statue is well known to fans who have visited Lucasfilm’s headquarters in San Francisco. The statue, which sits in the middle of an elegant fountain, even has its own Yelp page.

Then we see R2-D2 and Chopper show off their crafting skills as they make paper “Star Wars” snowflakes of the Death Star, Darth Vader, spacecrafts and various traditional flake designs.

At the end of the animation is the greeting “May the season be filled with friendship and laughter and good tidings to come. Best wishes from the Lucasfilm family.”

This marks the first year in decades that Lucasfilm, since being acquired by Disney, has opted for an animated holiday greeting rather than a collectible print card.

Past Lucasfilm Christmas cards have featured not only droids but Yoda and Jabba the Hutt dressed as Santa, Ewoks building snowmen, Jawas re-gifting trash, the Death Star as a ball tree ornament and even a pop-up card of caroling Stormtroopers. Watch the Lucasfilm animated holiday card here.
