Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, In crisis?

Via Pagesix.com:

The first “Star Wars” spinoff, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” is in crisis, and the movie will have to go into expensive reshoots over the summer, sources exclusively confirmed to Page Six.

The much-anticipated “Rogue One” is due for release on Dec. 16, but we’re told bosses at Disney are not fully satisfied with the first cut from director Gareth Edwards.

One Hollywood source told us, “The execs at Disney are not happy with the movie, and ‘Rogue One’ will have to go back into four weeks of expensive reshoots in July.”

The movie stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna. The “Star Wars” franchise’s first spinoff film will take us back in time to a point between Episodes III and IV. The plot reportedly sees resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s cruel rule.

There has been much speculation that the movie will take a darker turn and Darth Vader will appear as the Emperor’s chief enforcer. It is also believed that a young Han Solo will make a cameo appearance. Page Six exclusively revealed earlier this month that Alden Ehrenreich has landed the coveted part to play the young Solo, a role made famous by Harrison Ford.

It was announced earlier this month that Edwards would not direct “Godzilla 2” later this year, and would instead “focus on smaller films.” But the movie insider told us, “Gareth’s work on the first ‘Godzilla’ [which came out in 2014] shows he can handle a big studio blockbuster. But ‘Rogue One’ has fallen short of what J.J. Abrams did with ‘Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.’ So Disney has ordered reshoots.”

Edwards is well-known as a risk-taking director, but has also been reported to prefer to keep studio influence at a minimum. The source added, “Disney won’t take a back seat, and is demanding changes, as the movie isn’t testing well.”

Reps for Edwards didn’t get back to us last night.

A Disney source added, “The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting. Coming off ‘The Force Awakens,’ there’s an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.”

Rogue One: Star Wars Story Focuses On Death Star Takedown Team

Via Ew.com:

You’re going down, Death Star.

The debut teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has hit, revealing the first details of the Rebel team tasked with stealing plans for the Empire’s planet-killing battlestation.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One is the first spin-off in the Star Wars storyline, leaping back in the chronology nearly 40 years to explore a Rebel operation only hinted at in the 1977 original film. (To be clear for the casual fans: Rogue One comes out this Dec. 16, while the still untitled Episode VIII, which picks up the story of Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron after The Force Awakens, will come out in December 2017.)

Felicity Jones, an Oscar nominee for The Theory of Everything, plays the lead in the movie – a new character named Jyn Erso. (Although we only hear it pronounced in the trailer, that spelling is confirmed via a Lucasfilm source.)

We get our first taste of her character and motivation in the approximately 90-second tease. She’s a loose cannon, a troublemaker. And, judging by the handcuffs, an outlaw. “This is a rebellion, isn’t it?” she says to the leader we know from Return of the Jedi as Mon Mothma. “I rebel.”

She’s apparently an orphan who has been taking care of herself since her mid-teens, and we see a shot of her single-handedly taking down about half a dozen old-school stormtroopers.

The teaser also sheds some light on the rest of the film’s ensemble, including Milk star Diego Luna (who appears to be the Rebellion’s way of partnering her with someone they trust) and Firefly actor Alan Tudyk (who plays a performance capture character – and is very likely that skeletal droid who is seen running alongside them at one point).

Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline) appears to be an Imperial admiral in an ominous, intimidating costume; Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) looks like a scoundrel who has developed some good survivor skills after many fights; and Hong Kong action star and martial artist Donnie Yen takes down seemingly a whole garrison of stormtroopers with a single staff. Meanwhile, Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly) runs no-guts-no-glory-style into a beach battle looking like a human tank. They’re going to need such bravado to take down those Imperial walkers.

That leaves Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Nightcrawler) and Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) still in the shadows, unless I missed them. Time for a second viewing, then third, fourth ….

The Rogue One trailer ends on an enigmatic note: Jones’ character dressed in an Imperial uniform, while Whitaker’s voice asks: “If you continue to fight, what will you become?”

Okay, time to study it a little closer. Check back to EW shortly for a deeper dive into the Rogue One revelations.

Rogue One Trailer Close to Airing — Tone is Dark

Via Yahoo.com:

Reports are beginning to surface that the brass at Disney/Lucasfilm have seen multiple versions of the first Rogue One: A Star Wars trailer and are deciding which one to show to the public, first, and that the tone is dark…

In a recent tweet from the Editor in Chief of Cinelinx Jordan Maison, we’ve learned that the top suits at Disney/Lucasfilm have seen the Rogue One trailer, that there are a couple versions, the brass are deciding which version to show, and that the overall tone of the trailer is that it is dark. Here’s Maison’s tweet:

2016-02-25 11_39_45-REPORT_ Rogue One Trailer Close to Airing — Tone is Dark

Maison goes on later to say that he’s heard the tone of these trailers to be “dark.”

If this report pans out to be factually correct (and I believe it will, because Maison and Cinelinx are usually spot-on), then there really isn’t any big surprise here. From the very first time Disney released the first cast photo of Rogue One, the tone of the film seemed the most dark and gritty of a Star Wars film that we’ve ever seen, before.

Next: Will Boba Fett be in Rogue One?

We’ve also reported on Darth Vader having a much larger role in Rogue One, than previously thought, with a much more grisly and gruesome outcome for our Rebels. Reports from storyboards for some of Vader’s battle scenes have the Sith Lord decapitating bodies, dismembering his foes by throwing his lightsaber at them, and levitating bodies up to make himself meat shields…Rogue One is setting up to be a Star Wars film like none we’ve ever seen before.

Star Wars: Rogue One – Release Date, Trailers and News

Via Techradar.com:

Star Wars: Rogue One is the next movie to hit our screens from a long time ago and a galaxy far, far away. Its full title is actually Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but that’s so lame it makes Tiny Tim look like a varsity athlete.

It’s the first live action movie to depart from the traditional episodic nature of the rest of the Star Wars movies, and an almost complete departure from the fan-favourite characters the rest of the films follow.

What’s interesting about these Star Wars ‘anthology’ movies is that they will be standalone counterpoints between the episodic releases of the main story, and won’t really be set around the Jedi or the struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force.

Rogue One in particular is being talked about in shades of grey, with a darker, grittier tone than we might have seen from any Star Wars property before.

Rogue One is also going to be set out of chronological order, potentially confusing a whole bunch of folk expecting to see the sequel to The Force Awakens, and will pre-date the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

So, what do we know about Star Wars: Rogue One so far?

Star Wars: Rogue One release date

The most important news is exactly when we can expect to see the new movie: it’s going to be around one year after The Force Awakens premiered, and will be in cinemas on December 16, 2016.

Filming is apparently “virtually completed” according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who added that he and his colleagues “absolutely love what we’ve seen so far”.

Will Smith’s ‘Collateral Beauty’ to Battle ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’

Via Hollywoodreporter.com:

New Line and Warner Bros. have set a Dec. 16 release date for Collateral Beauty, the same day that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters.

Collateral Beauty, also starring Helen Mirren, hopes to serve as counterprogramming to the Star Wars spinoff. Edward Norton, Michael Pena and Naomie Harris also star in the drama about a New York ad man (Will Smith) who is sent into a downward spiral after a tragic event.

The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me helmer David Frankel is directing from a script by Allan Loeb. Village Roadshow Pictures is partnering with New Line on the movie.

At the same time, Warners has pulled Alcon Entertainment’s Chicken Soup for the Soul from the release calendar. An adaptation of the self-help best-seller, the film doesn’t have a new date, but the studio has indicated it would come out in 2017.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is expected to have four intersecting inspirational real-life (but fictionalized) stories. The script is being written by Lewis Colick.

Warner Bros. would release the movie via Alcon’s output deal.

Star Wars: Rogue One Script

Via Gamespot.com:

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens still performing incredibly well at the box office, it’s funny to think that we’re now less than eleven months away from the next Star Wars movie. The standalone Rogue One opens in December, and it has been revealed that a high-profile script doctor was brought in to fine-tune the screenplay.

Birthmoviesdeath have corroborated a story that originally ran in the Latino Review that Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation writer/director Christopher McQuarrie was hired to tackle the script. McQuarrie was the fourth writer to work on the movie, following John Knoll, Gary Whitta, and Chris Weitz.

As well as writing such movies as The Usual Suspects and Edge of Tomorrow and directing Rogue Nation and Jack Reacher, McQuarrie has a reputation as one of the most in-demand script doctors in Hollywood. His work on World War Z helped turned a troubled, overbudget movie into a hit, and BMD’s source suggests that he “saved” Rogue One.

Rogue One is directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards. It is set before the original Star Wars, and focuses upon a group of mercenaries who are hired to capture the plans to the Death Star. The cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen.

The second standalone Star Wars movie will be the young Han Solo film, which is set for a 2018 release. Last week, it was reported that the list of potential actors in the running to play Solo has been narrowed to around a dozen names, including Miles Teller, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, and Logan Lerman.

Star Wars: Rogue One will hit cinemas on December 16, 2016.
