Star Wars Battlefront Dev “Really Scared” in the Beginning

Via Gamingbolt.com:

DICE has had some favourable impressions for Star Wars Battlefront since E3 2015 showcased the first ever gameplay footage. However, when DICE GM Patrick Bach and his team were first approached about making the game, they were scared. This is to be expected – of the many franchises in the past few decades, Star Wars has perhaps inspired the biggest backlash among fans.
Speaking to the Guardian, Bach said that, “When we were asked to do this we were really scared. We thought, no, this is too intimidating.
“And we had enough in our pipeline to be able to say no. But on the other hand, your heart is screaming yes! Because of course you want to make a Star Wars game. We just thought, okay, we’ll figure it out as we go.”
Thus far it’s worked out, though there has been criticism for certain elements like the lack of a campaign mode, similarities to Battlefield and much more. Star Wars Battlefront will release in November for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

SCENEPLAY ALLOWS PLAYERS TO ACT IN OR DIRECT FAMOUS STAR WARS SCENE

Via Vrfocus.com:

Virtual reality (VR) technology can be used to put players and audiences in their favourite movies for the first time, but what about directing them? That’s what ScenePlay, a new VR experience from dSky, will allow fans to do. Today the team is releasing its first look at the software, which grants players control of a famous scene from one of the most popular movies of all time; Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The software uses the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to allow players to step inside the movie and even direct it.

The scene in question is set in iconic Jedi Obi Wan Kenobi’s hut on the desert planet of Tatooine. Here, Kenobi and the then-young Luke Skywalker view a distress call from Princess Leia with the help of the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. ScenePlay will allow players to step inside this scene, reciting the lines of Luke, Obi Wan or Leia and even taking charge as the director of the scene, just as George Lucas himself did when filming the sci-fi classic. As Luke, players will even be able to use a Razer Hydra motion controller to wield a lightsaber.

The free version of these experience can currently be downloaded from WEARVR for both Windows and Mac. The piece is described by dSky as a ‘proof-of-concept’ for interactive cinema. Those interested in the company’s work can head to an official website to view more of its work and sign up for a beta program. The site also states that, along with the Oculus Rift, the developer is also working on bringing its software to both the HTC Vive on PC and Project Morpheus HMD for PlayStation 4, though there isn’t any word on when we might see work for these kits.

Star Wars: Battlefront Alpha Details And Videos Leak All Over The Internet

Via Pcgamer.com:
Star Wars Battlefront closed alpha testing has begun. The way we know this is that videos of the upcoming shooter have leaked all over everywhere, despite EA’s best efforts to mop up the resulting mess.

Of course, all of these are liable to disappear at any moment, as EA does its best to control the flow of information. What they won’t be able to remove is the details being mined and posted to places like NeoGAF. There you can find lists of the weapons and vehicles included in the alpha.
By the sounds of it, Twitch users attempting to stream the alpha are having their access revoked mid-broadcast—the publication of such footage being a breach of the NDA agreement that accompanies closed alpha acceptance. Those poor, poor Bothans.

Star Wars Battlefront Features the “Absolute Core” of Film Series

Via Gamespot.com:
The Star Wars universe is massive, replete with all manner of intriguing locations, characters, and storylines that fans adore passionately. So, if you’re DICE and you’re designing the new Star Wars Battlefront, how do you decide what makes it into a single, standalone game?

We recently got the chance to speak with Battlefront senior producer Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir about that very subject. She explained that what you’ll see in Battlefront represents the “absolute core” of the overall Star Wars universe.
“I wouldn’t say that we’ve designed it by committee. We have a very strong, very competent design lead. But, basically, what we’ve taken is what to us is the core of Star Wars,” she said. “Star Wars is so vast, there’s so many things in Star Wars that are beloved by so many. And so they are hard choices.

“We selected what we felt was the absolute core of Star Wars. And people can then debate that endlessly whether this is more core than that. Or why do you have this and not this. We can’t do everything, unfortunately.”

With the exception of a new planet called Sullust, everything we’ve seen so far from Battlefront is immediately recognizable to Star Wars fans. Whether it’s planets like Hoth or Endor, or characters like Darth Vader or Han Solo, it’s clear that DICE has chosen some of Star Wars’ most iconic elements.

Also in our interview, Ingvarsdottir discussed how Battlefront will be similar–and different–to DICE’s most iconic franchise, Battlefield. Though Battlefront may borrow some elements from Battlefield, DICE wants fans to know that Battlefront is very much its own game.

“Battlefield is our heritage at DICE, and I think what’s great for us is that we have a team that’s a mixture of Battlefield veteran developers and developers like myself who have never worked on a Battlefield game,” she explained. “So we have a mix of people.

“I don’t think people would argue that DICE is the master of epic-scale and vehicular gameplay. And obviously that fits so well with what we’re doing here [with Battlefront]. But at the same time, there are other aspects of Battlefield that…we’ve kind of taken some of the aspects of what made Battlefield great and added them into our game. And then we’ve gone in a very different direction on other aspects of it. We want Battlefront to be its own thing, have its own unique ID, and be its own unique experience. But of course there’s a lot that people will recognize.”

She concluded, “In a way, DICE is a premiere developer of FPS shooters, and obviously we bring such a great amount of experience and knowledge to the game.”

Battlefront launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 17.

No Death Star Map In Star Wars: Battlefront

Via Vg247.com:

Let’s put this one to bed: there is no Death Star map in Star Wars: Battlefront.

We already know that Star Wars: Battlefront isn’t doing space battles or space maps, but now EA has clarified that there will not be any infantry battles taking place on a map based on the iconic Death Star space station.

“We will not offer a Death Star based map. But stay tuned for details around the maps we will offer,” offered EA community managers in a recent Reddit thread.

Speaking of massive spacecraft, it was also confirmed that Star Destroyers will feature in the game, but you won’t be able to bring them down with your puny blasters.

“Yes you will see them within maps, but you can’t physically shoot them down. But the progression of how you’re playing will influence the Battles beyond the players’ battle,” confirmed the team.

The Star Wars: Battlefront closed alpha begins July 2 for a select few. We recently stormed Hoth as part of the Empire, and enjoyed every second of it.

Star Wars: Battlefront is out on PS4, PC and Xbox One on November 17.

New Star Wars Game “Along the Same Lines” as 1313

Via Gamespot.com:

Visceral Games’ mysterious Star Wars project will bear similarities to Star Wars: 1313, the ill-fated third-person action game from LucasArts, and Sony’s Uncharted series, according to voice actor Nolan North.

Speaking at a panel held at Metrocon, which was recorded and posted online, North–known for playing Nathan Drake–discussed the departure of Uncharted writer Amy Hennig from Naughty Dog, and her current project co-writing a new Star Wars game for EA.

According to North, EA and Visceral’s game is modelled after Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series.

“If you’re a big fan of Amy Hennig and her style of story, she’s gone to EA and is going to reboot a brand new Star Wars franchise in the style of Uncharted,” he said. “I happen to know a lot about it and it’s going to be awesome.”

Asked if Hennig’s Star Wars project was 1313, North said “it’s different,” but “along the same lines.”

Amy Hennig left Naughty Dog in March 2014. At the time, reports indicated she was allegedly “forced out” by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, creative director and game director respectively on The Last of Us. This was not confirmed, however.

Druckmann and Straley are now heading up development on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

In 2013, Disney and Electronic Arts signed an agreement to make the Battlefield publisher the exclusive creator of console Star Wars games going forward. A year later, it was confirmed Hennig would co-write a new Star Wars game in development at Dead Space studio Visceral Games.

Shortly before the announcement, Hennig tweeted a picture of herself having breakfast with her co-writer Todd Stashwick, as well as North and Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan, who was wearing a Star Wars-themed t-shirt.

Visceral Games’ Star Wars title is rumored to be an open-world game, though EA has yet to provide any concrete details on the game.

Star Wars 1313 was originally announced at E3 2012 as a third-person action adventure game from LucasArts. Early footage of the game, which was set to feature Boba Fett as its protagonist, was very reminiscent of Uncharted.

Star War 1313 was cancelled in April 2013 when Disney closed LucasArts. Following this, Disney abandoned its trademark for Star Wars 1313 and the game’s creative director, Dominic Robilliard, joined the PlayStation team, all but confirming the project had been scrapped enitrely.

Star Wars Battlefront featured prominently at E3 2015. We had a chance to play Star Wars Battlefront, and even took to the field as Luke Skywalker, flexing our Jedi abilities in combat.

The final version of Star Wars Battlefront is coming out on November 17 and will be available for not just PC, but Xbox One and PS4 as well.

EA Prepared To Delay Star Wars Battlefront ‘if it wasn’t right’

Via Videogamer.com:

EA would be prepared to delay Star Wars Battlefront beyond November if “something went wrong” in the run-up to the game’s launch, COO Peter Moore has said.

Speaking to MCV, Moore explained that “you can’t ship it if it doesn’t work or the quality isn’t right. You just bite the bullet. Trust me, shipping [Battlefield] Hardline in March was not the easiest thing to do from a business perspective, but it was the right thing to do from a player perspective.

“We’d have no compunction, no hesitation that if something went wrong with Battlefront, if it wasn’t right, we would just push it.”

“But that’s not going to happen,” he continued. “The game is playable with 40-players already, and it is rock solid, so it ain’t going to happen”.

Moore’s comments follow 18 months after the publisher encountered major problems at the launch of Battlefield 4, a similar online shooter to Star Wars Battlefront. It later delayed cops & robbers spin-off Battlefield Hardline from October 2014 to March 2015 to ensure the game could be “as great as it can be”.

Star Wars Battlefront, meanwhile, launches on PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 20, one month ahead of this year’s blockbuster movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

11 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC’S KNIGHTS OF THE FALLEN EMPIRE EXPANSION

Via Ign.com:

BioWare turned heads at E3 with yet another gorgeous trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Its new expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire, introduced us to a pair of force-sensitive brothers, one dressed in black, the other in white, who lead a powerful new faction in galactic battles.

After watching the trailer on repeat a few times, we chatted with BioWare about how this new expansion will play, how much it costs, and whether we can play it with friends. These are the 11 things you need to know before jumping back into BioWare’s Star Wars MMO.

1. Knights of the Fallen Empire is only for subscribers.
You must be a subscriber to Star Wars: The Old Republic to access the new expansion. If you subscribe early, you’ll gain early access to Knights of the Fallen Empire as well as in-game bonuses, including a new companion and vehicle. BioWare isn’t making this expansion accessible any other way — not even as a standalone product. There’s a good reason for that…

2. It’s free for subscribers.
BioWare is giving every subscriber access to the next expansion — as well as every other one. Shadow of Revan, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, and the rest of SWTOR’s expansion packs come with Knights of the Fallen Empire. So, newcomers could join in on launch day, subscribe, and get access to everything.

New Era Of Star Wars Gaming Is Here

Via Theverge.com:

I was standing in a replica of the Hoth Rebel base from The Empire Strikes Back, part of a massive line to check out the multiplayer demo of EA’s upcoming title Star Wars: Battlefront. Dry ice pumped in from somewhere, and as we waited, an R2-D2 unit in the corner made the occasional deedly-bleep-boop. I asked the man in front of me how long he’d been waiting to try the game. “Three hours,” he said.

Make no mistake: Star Wars was huge at E3 this year. Along with Battlefront, three other titles were either shown off or announced during the show. Disney Infinity 3.0 adds characters and locations from the franchise to the game’s cast of Pixar, Disney, and Marvel faces. BioWare’s Knights of the Fallen Empire expands its MMORPG The Old Republic with a new series of episodic storylines, and during its press conference EA announced Galaxy of Heroes, a card collecting game for mobile devices. While the last few years of Star Wars gaming have been full of chaos and cancellations, Disney and Lucasfilm are now opening the floodgates with a coordinated blitzkrieg designed to bring Star Wars to every possible gaming audience in the galaxy — if people don’t get sick of it first.

Star Wars: Battlefront Hands-On Preview

Via Technobuffalo.com:

The line for Star Wars: Battlefront was absolutely nuts at E3. The game is going to be exceptionally popular. Even with an appointment to see it and access to the media line, it took me more than an hour of waiting to sit down and play.

If you watched EA’s presentation on Monday, we played that same battle on Hoth. The Rebels activate a series of outposts in order to call in Y-Wing bomber runs on the AT-ATs and AT-STs. The AT-ATs are only vulnerable when bombed, and that’s when the Rebels have the best chance to strike.

I played on the Imperial team. Our job was to guard the walkers as they slowly stalked their way to the generators on the planet. We stop the rebels from activating the beacons for the bombers. If they do keep them active, we beat back them and the Y-Wings as the fly in. Do it for three sections of map and you win.

We won.

My battle stayed strictly on foot, before you ask. I wanted to hop into a TIE Fighter, but they were always unusable. There are chips on the map that let you call in the vehicles. They aren’t just sitting in the open, at least not in this mode.

But, on foot, I had a lot of fun. In the course of something like 15 or 20 minutes, I wound up going 47-10 and standing in the second place on our full team leaderboard.

This game feels, looks and sounds incredibly Star Wars-esque. That seems like a given what with the license and all, but it’s not. In the 15 or 20 minutes I had with this game, it felt immediately and definitely more like a Star Wars experience than anything else I’ve ever played. It felt like being placed right in the boots of a lowly soldier on Hoth.

I tried both loadouts on offer and used all five of the blasters, but I wound up sticking with a long range blaster and the ability to blast up with a jump pack and fire three rounds of grenades over long distances in quick succession.

I was a force to be reckoned with, fellow nerds. The Rebels come in all sorts of species, and I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome it was shooting one that looked like Greedo from A New Hope. (They’re called Rodians… learn you Star Wars species, Joey! – Sean, Editor-in-Chief)
