Details On C-3PO’s Red Arm In Star Wars: The Force Awakens Book

Via Comicbook.com:

C-3PO (played by Anthony Daniels) delivers one of more memorable lines in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he sees Han Solo (Harrison Ford) for the first time in many years. “You probably don’t recognize me with my red arm,” said the protocol droid. Outside of that one line, his red arm is never brought up again.

Fans have been dying for an explanation as why he is sporting the new, colorful appendage and now they’ll have it. A page from a companion book for the film has surfaced online and it fills in the blanks. “C-3PO is uncharacteristically quiet when it comes to discussing his salvaged arm; it is a memento of another droid’s sacrifice,” the caption reads.

Box Office: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Tops ‘Revenge of the Sith’ in U.S.

Via Hollywoodreporter.com:

Crossing $813 million globally, J.J. Abrams’ reboot has also surpassed the entire global gross of ‘Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones’; a flurry of new movies open on Christmas Day.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens saw its North American cume rise to $391.1 million on Christmas Eve, passing up the $380.3 million earned in 2005 by Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of Sith.

That means J.J. Abrams’ blockbuster has now earned more domestically than both Episode III and Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones ($310.7 million) in less than a week in release, not accounting for inflation. And it’s already surpassed the entire global gross of Attack of the Clones in 2002 ($649.4 million). Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace grossed $430 million domestically in 1999 and $1 billion worldwide.

‘Star Wars’ Added to Critics’ Choice Awards Best Picture Race

Via Variety.com:

In an unusual, although not unprecedented move, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has received an 11th-hour Critics’ Choice Award nomination for best picture more than a week after contenders were initially announced.

The sci-fi epic, which hit theaters on Friday, has been added as the 11th best picture nominee, the Broadcast Film Critics Association announced on Tuesday. The film was not screened in time for nominations balloting so the board of directors decided to hold a special vote on Monday to determine if it would have been nominated had members been able to consider it. J.J. Abrams’ pic was thereby able to thwart the rules.

In 2000, “Cast Away” also screened too late for normal consideration and the BFCA included it among 11 best picture nominees.

The 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards nominations were revealed on Dec. 14, with “Mad Max: Fury Road” dominating the film race with 13 nods and FX’s “Fargo” leading TV series noms with eight.

The 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by T.J. Miller, will be held on Jan. 17 and air live at 5 p.m. PT on A&E, Lifetime and LMN.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association is returning to the Critics’ Choice name after splitting the awards into two ceremonies in 2010.

J.J. Abrams, Collaborators Talk ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ After Academy Screening

Via Hollywoodreporter.com:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has awakened in a major way: J.J. Abrams’ installment of the beloved franchise opened to record-breaking numbers at the box office and an impressive 95 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com; landed a spot on the AFI’s list of the top 10 films of the year; was added on to the list of best picture Critics’ Choice Award nominees; and, last but certainly not least, was warmly embraced by Oscar voters — at its premiere, at its official Academy screening on Saturday and at a Disney-organized screening at the Academy on Friday night, after which I moderated a Q&A with many of the key talent behind the film.

Friday night’s screening, which drew more than 200 Academy members (in addition to 600 others from the various guilds), couldn’t have gone over any better with attendees. There was enthusiastic applause in all the right places — as each beloved character from the previous installments resurfaced, and for a full minute at the end of the film — and certainly in response to a number of answers during the Q&A, which featured Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, VFX supervisor Roger Guyett, editors Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon, cinematographer Daniel Mindel, costume designer Michael Kaplan and co-production designer Rick Carter, all of whom had returned to L.A. from the film’s London premiere only hours earlier.

What Harrison Ford Was Paid For Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Via Metro.co.uk:

Harrison Ford is set to earn more than £23 million for reprising his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The actor, 73, was paid £16.7 million for appearing in the film along with a 0.5 per cent share of the film’s gross earnings.
The blockbuster is expected to make at least £1.3 billion, which means his share could be worth £6.5 million, according to The Mail on Sunday.
His total pay out could be £23 million, which means he’ll be paid 76 times what newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega will make.

Both stars got a £300,000 pay cheque and will take a cut of the box office earnings once it makes over $1 billion (£671 million).
A Disney source told the paper: ‘Harrison is the key to making this movie work. He’s the link between the old generation and the new. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were good to get, but the film could have lived without them. You couldn’t make it without Harrison Ford.
‘Daisy’s a virtual unknown, and this is a career-making role, so she’d probably have been willing to take it for free – and Disney knew it.

‘She has been signed to a multi-picture deal with pre-set bumps in her salary that rise substantially with each movie. That doesn’t guarantee she’ll be in subsequent films, but it gives the studio peace of mind to know she’s contractually obliged if they want her again.’
Carrie Fisher was paid £1 million for returning as General Leia while director JJ Abrams got £3.3 million along with a two per cent share of the film’s gross.
Ford was originally paid £7,000 for the original 1977 Star Wars film.
