It turns out there was a lot more to discover…

1. We were supposed to learn the full story of Luke’s lightsaber

The opening scene was intended to show the journey of the weapon from Luke’s duel with Darth Vader on Cloud City till it finally came into Maz Kanata’s hands.

Of course in the final cut, when asked about where she got the blue lightsaber, she replies, “A good question for another time.” How frustrating…

2. BB-8 was mainly performed by puppeteers

The majority of BB-8’s appearance weren’t created with CGI but were actually practical effects performed by puppeteers armed with a lot of wires and poles.

Abrams repeatedly apologizes to puppeteer Brian Herring for painting him out of the movie.
