Star Wars Costume Designer Reveals Former Princess Leia Will Look ‘More Regal’ in The Force Awakens

Via People.com:

Costume designer Michael Kaplan was very hands-on with his work in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whether outfitting space captains or princesses turned generals turned … princesses again?

“Initially we see Leia in a working environment, and [director] J.J. Abrams liked the idea of dressing her for that situation,” Kaplan told PEOPLE of Leia’s conservative garb as general in the Resistance. “Later on we do see her looking a bit more regal.”

Kaplan originally thought a career in costumes would lead him to making “pretty dresses,” so he’s surprised as anyone that he’s become the go-to sci-fi designer, from Blade Runner and Star Trek to Dec. 18’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “There are a few dresses in Star Wars,” he reveals, “but I wouldn’t call them pretty.”

Actually, Kaplan’s favorite Star Wars costume from the original trilogy belongs to “C-3PO, no contest.” And he got to go all-out on new designs like Captain Ithano, the red-helmeted character seen in Maz Kanata’s castle and appearing in a Star Wars spinoff book called The Crimson Corsair and the Lost Treasure of Count Dooku.

He also had the chance to craft mature looks for Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.

“I wanted Han’s costume to feel familiar, since Harrison Ford is the same actor playing the same character,” Kaplan says. “Of course he’s older, but he’s still in terrific shape. I wanted it to seem like Han was still choosing his own garb. As for Luke, I’m not sure. Let me know what you think on Dec. 18.”

GQ: OSCAR ISAAC TALKS “STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS”

OSCAR ISAAC ON HIS STAR WARS’ CHARACTER, THE SEQUELS, AND RELIGION

New York, N.Y.—“J.J. basically told me it was an intense, heroic, dramatic character and he hadn’t seen me do that,” Oscar Isaacs tells GQ’s Brett Martin of his first time reading from the Star Wars script for J.J. Abrams. “I didn’t know if I could make it interesting. I didn’t know why me and not anybody else.” Abrams sees it differently: “Oscar is a far more sophisticated actor than one might get for a role that could be looked at as just a daring, kick-ass pilot.”

So how did Star Wars compare to working on Llweyn Davis and Ex Machina? “I actually felt the most green and insecure than I had in a long time,” says Isaac of his latest role. “I was like, What am I doing here? There was a lot of room to shade in the character. Every time I tried to do that, it would slow things down too much. J.J. would be like, ‘Get on with it, man!’ Just, Louder! Faster! And then I would feel like I was doing that all the time. It felt weird and like I was not being creative. I would get nervous I wasn’t finding enough or I was missing an opportunity.”

When asked if the prospect of two more Star Wars movies causes him anxiety, Isaac brightens. “No! Because what’s so fun about it is…it’s all made-up! It’s all fucking made-up, but in a great way. We get to create it as we go.”

Isaac’s family moved to the U.S. from Guatemala when he was 5 months old. “For my father,” says Isaacs, “individualism was very important, and he instilled that in me. It was way more important to recognize myself as an individual than as a part of a group. I wasn’t part of the ‘Latino community.’ I was just a kid in high school with friends, who was into playing music… I never thought of myself as an ethnic actor,” he adds. “I don’t feel comfortable saying I speak for Guatemalans. Or for Latino men. Or for Latin men that are five nine….”

On his religious family: “My dad was a man of extremes. And the way my mom was raised, she followed her husband. So if God spoke to my father one day and said we were not supposed to have a TV in the house, it was suddenly gone. The Hernandez home became the site of a kind of ongoing tent revival…. I was never frightened by it,” Isaacs says of his father’s approach to religion. “I was more curious why I wasn’t feeling the real thing myself.”

After Isaacs broke away from the Church, in what he calls a “slow amputation,” he began to find spiritual experiences in his acting methodology. “A director is always thinking, ‘What is the right combination of words that I can say that will unlock the right response in you? If I can say the right thing, it will unlock this thing in you, but if I say it wrong, the opposite with happen.’ Religion is a very similar thing. Like, somebody was meditating long enough that they put the right sentence together and thought, ‘If you say these words in exactly this way, you’ll know how to live, but you have to say it exactly like this.’ The problem is that it’s not always the same for everybody.”

The January issue of GQ will be available on newsstands in New York and L.A. on Tuesday December 15, and nationally December 22.

How The New “Star Wars” Begins

Via Cbsnews.com:

J.J. Abrams was 11 years old when he saw “Star Wars” for the first time. Like countless kids, he was mesmerized by the epic tale of good versus evil set in a galaxy far, far away. Little did he know that one day he’d be handpicked to write and direct the seventh film in the series, “The Force Awakens,” which opens this week.

On 60 Minutes, Bill Whitaker profiles Abrams and goes behind the scenes of the much-anticipated film, the first installment since Disney purchased the franchise from George Lucas for $4 billion three years ago. On 60 Minutes Overtime, viewers can see extra interview clips and snippets from the movie, which strives to stay faithful to the “Star Wars” brand while attracting a new generation of fans.

One irreplaceable holdover from the past is composer John Williams, 83, who created the original film’s iconic score and has worked on every “Star Wars” since. In the video above, he records the opening music for “The Force Awakens.” Abrams is clearly thrilled. “This may be the most surreal, you know, being in the presence of John Williams, who I used to listen to as a kid on the floor of my room with my headphones on,” he tells Whitaker.

“It’s almost cheating, when you have John Williams, because he writes feelings,” Abrams says. “He knows how to make your heart soar like no one else.”

But Williams isn’t the only Hollywood legend in Abrams’ corner these days. Steven Spielberg actually helped him get hired to direct the film.

‘Star Wars’ Premiere Street Closures Are “Bigger Than the Oscars”

Via MSN.com:

While the Star Wars: The Force Awakens world premiere doesn’t take place in Hollywood until Monday night, the construction of a massive tent on Hollywood Blvd. is already underway.

Four blocks of the iconic street — from Highland Ave. to La Brea Ave. — were already closed to traffic Thursday night at 11 p.m. On Friday, a large white tent was being erected on the boulevard, which hosts the famous Hollywood stars on its sidewalk.

As construction continued Friday afternoon, traffic officers stood on either end of Highland and La Brea, to direct and divert cars to the marked detours, while police officers patrolled the sidewalks, walking through groups of tourists.

“This is definitely bigger than the Oscars,” one production manager told THR Friday. The Oscars, held at the end of February, close down one block on Hollywood Blvd., from Highland Ave. to Orange Dr.

Disney and Lucasfilm have not officially told guests which theaters will be used in Hollywood for the premiere. The blocks of Hollywood Blvd. that are closed include three: The Dolby (where the Oscars are held), El Capitan Theater and the TCL Chinese Theater.

In spite of the street closure, the sidewalks on Hollywood Blvd. will remain open through the weekend, allowing foot access to all businesses along that stretch. Public parking at the Hollywood & Highland center also remains open. However some shop owners tell THR that they plan to be closed on Monday, when the actual premiere takes place.

With The Force Awakens arriving in theaters next week, Disney is taking the lobby merchandise up a notch, peddling a variety of “Galaxy Premiere” goods, from keychains to hoodies, in select theaters for a limited time (see the complete list of participating movie houses) beginning with preview showings on Dec. 17. The Last Human Robot

Via Vulture.com:

There was no way I was going to just do the voice. C-3PO is an integration — look at the light on that tree!” Anthony Daniels, the only actor who’s appeared in every Star Wars movie, tromps briskly through London’s Regent’s Park on an unseasonably balmy Halloween afternoon. We’re due shortly at his home to catch the Rugby World Cup final. Speaking into the digital recorder he swiped from me at the start of our walk, he recounts his first chat with J.J. Abrams, the director of Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Abrams offered to put another actor inside the stiff and fussy protocol droid known as C-3PO, thus sparing Daniels a few months in form-fitting plastic. Daniels flatly declined. On our walk, he’s suited more comfortably: chambray shirt, jeans, and a peacoat that hangs loosely on his frame, still slight and sleek at 69. “Now,” Daniels says, as crisply as 3PO, “I’m part of the — what is the word?”

Carrie Fisher recently called them “legacy players.” Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Peter “Chewbacca” Mayhew have all returned for the first proper sequel to 1983’s Return of the Jedi. (Forget George Lucas’s prequels; many would prefer to.) “I keep calling us heritage players,” says Daniels. “I feel more like an heirloom on the mantelpiece than anything.”
