RICE FARMERS CREATE STAR WARS MURAL IN PADDY

Via Ign.com:

Rice farmers in Japan recently found a unique way to express their love of Star Wars.

Located in Inkadate Village in Japan’s Aomori prefecture, a design team used computer software to map out a mural featuring BB-8, C-3PO, and R2D2 made entirely out of rice plants.

Once they had finalized the field’s design, specially-marked reeds mapping out individual lines were placed in the paddy. Mental Floss reports that later, planters began sowing different types of rice plants to get the varied color effect that comprises the design.

Creating large images using carefully-placed rice plants has been a tradition in Inkadate village for some time. Typically, these feature classic Japanese artwork rather than geek-caliber creations, but the community was willing to make an exception in this case.
