Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: Jyn Erso’s Mother Announced

Via Bleedingcool.com:

Valene Kane, star of The Fall and Thirteen, has been added to the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Kane will be playing Lyra Erso, wife of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and mother of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones).

How big the role of Lyra is remains to be seen. Jyn is the main star and we know that Galen is a pivotal character as he works on the construction of the Death Star and alerts the Rebels to the existence of the weapon.

Kane spoke to Belfast Live about the casting:

I grew up watching Stars Wars and I didn’t believe it was happening until I was filming in Iceland. It has a really edgy independent vibe.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Replaces Its Composer

Via Hollywoodreporter.com:

Alexandre Desplat was originally slated to compose the music for the new movie. Then the reshoots happened.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first stand-alone movie in the Star Wars franchise, will be whistling a new tune.

Michael Giacchino, the composer behind such films as the Star Trek reboot and Pixar movies ranging from The Incredibles to Inside Out, will score the upcoming pic, stepping in for Alexandre Desplat, who was originally slated to work on the movie.

The recent reshoots are behind the switch, according to sources.

Rogue One underwent extensive reshoots this summer that saw writer Tony Gilroy take on a filmmaker role during the shoot and the postproduction process as Disney and Lucasfilm sought to clarify story and tonal issues for the pic that is set to open Dec. 16

But the reshoots also altered the scoring calendar and Desplat, who won an Oscar for The Grand Budapest Hotel, was no longer available. Disney and Lucasfilm then turned to Giacchino, who has a long relationship with the studio and its various divisions.

For Pixar, the maestro created the music for Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up (for which he won an Oscar), Cars 2 and Inside Out. For its live-action film division, he has worked on Sky High, John Carter and Tomorrowland. For Disney Animation this year, Giacchino scored its surprise hit Zootopia. And he’s making his Marvel Studios debut with Doctor Strange, which opens Nov. 4. (With Rogue One, he will end up working for all four of Disney’s film arms.)

Giacchino also is a Star Wars fan and appeared as a storm trooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by his pal J.J. Abrams and for whom he has scored films and television shows.

Giaachino will now become the first composer to work on a Star Wars movie other than the film series’ iconic mainstay, John Williams, who is slated to return for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One – The Optimistic Box Office Prediction

Via Forbes.com:

Today is Sept. 15, which means we are exactly three months away from the theatrical debut of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in a number of foreign territories, including Greece, Russia and Italy. For the record, it opens in North America, the United Kingdom and Japan (among other places) on Dec. 16 of this year.

Like I did last year around this time with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I’m going to offer a two- or three-part box office prediction post divided into “pessimistic,” “optimistic” and (if there is anything left to say) “realistic” posts.

Yesterday was the somewhat “sky is falling” pessimistic prediction, one predicated on the film not being good, audiences not being as curious the second time out, and the film behaving like a worst-case-scenario December fantasy release here and abroad. Today is the other side of that coin, which is the “Holy crap, everything went right!” scenario.

Felicity Jones Thinks Star Wars Fans Will Love The Rebels Of Rogue One

Via Cinemablend.com:

The original Star Wars movie gave moviegoers a broad look at the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and Empire decades ago, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is going back to that time period to navigate deeper into the “trenches.” Emphasizing the “Wars” more of the franchise, fans are going to meet a new group of Rebel fighters who aren’t nearly as famous as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo, but were nonetheless important to the cause. Fortunately, according to lead actress Felicity Jones, Star Wars fans will love these main characters due to how “flawed” they feel.

In the midst of interviewing Jones about her new movie, A Monster Calls, Yahoo posed a few Rogue One questions, including which other characters besides her own, Jyn Erso, the actress thinks fans will “latch onto.” She said:

“I think you’ll love all the rebels. Because they’re flawed. They’ve all had histories, they’ve all had their own struggles, and I feel like people are going to really champion them and fall in love with them.”

While the original Star Wars protagonists certainly weren’t without their share of struggles, it’s good to hear that the Rogue One characters have their own issues, making them compelling to watch rather than folks who are “perfect” and uninteresting. Let’s start with Jyn Erso: she’s spent most of her life fighting to survive and striking back against the impressive Imperials, not to mention that she’s been estranged from her father Galen, a scientist involved with creating the Death Star. That background is more than enough to make us want to root for her as she joins the Rebellion effort.

‘Rogue One’ Is The Year’s Great Box Office Mystery

Via Forbes.com:

We are just over three months out from the international debut of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That means I’ll probably do a three-part “pessimistic,” “optimistic” and “realistic” box office prediction series sometime next week, just as I did with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But to be honest, I have absolutely no idea how well this Walt Disney release is going to perform this December, partially because there has never really been a movie quite like Rogue One on this scale.

For the record, this does not mean to suggest that Rogue One won’t be, barring unforeseen variables, a big hit this year. The trailers are great, the fans are psyched, and the there is little reason to presume it won’t clean house this December. But how big of a hit it will be is where the fun lies. Because this is arguably something of an unprecedented release, at least in modern time. First of all, the very notion of a spin-off to a blockbuster movie isn’t as prevalent as you might expect.

Okay, sure, you’ve got honest spin-offs like This Is 40, Get Him to the Greek, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones or Supergirl. You’ve got the “spin-off that’s a sequel if we’re truly being honest with each other” stuff like U.S. Marshals and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. You’ve got a few recent animated spin-offs (Puss N Boots, Penguins of Madagascar, and Minions). That’s not a remotely comprehensive list, but it’s not like Lucasfilm was looking at Planes or Get Smart’s Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control when running the numbers.

Rogue One can best be described as a prequel to Star Wars: A New Hope, but far be it for anyone to mention the word “prequel” in connection with the Star Wars films. It’s a “before A New Hope” story that involves a new cast of characters along with explicit narrative connections to the Star Wars world and at least one or two beloved old-school characters showing up rapturous audience applause. Oh, what I’d give for even a deleted scene where Darth Vader waves at the audience as he strolls onscreen complete with audience applause.
