THE FORCE AWAKENS HAS CHANGED STAR WARS FOREVER

Via Wired.com:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been a hit with audiences and is already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It features great visuals, snappy dialogue, and a likeable cast of young actors such as Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac. Children’s book editor Jordan London was particularly taken with the character Rey (Ridley).

“I think Rey is fantastic,” London says in Episode 183 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. “She’s everything I imagined a female Jedi to be when I was running around a forest when I was nine.”

Author Matt London enjoyed the film as well, but he’s concerned that it has fundamentally altered the nature of Star Wars.

“This movie did something to the original trilogy that can never be undone,” he says. “I think it changes the original trilogy in ways that the prequels and the Expanded Universe—as complex and controversial as they are in some ways—never did.”

In particular he’s concerned that The Force Awakens has transformed the Star Wars feature films from a unified story with a satisfying ending into just another serialized sci-fi franchise like Star Trek or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Star Wars is the modern myth,” he says. “It’s the epic that you can use to teach narrative structure, because it fits it so well. And the thing that made me so mad about this movie is, how do you tell the story of Star Wars to your kids now? You say, ‘At the end all the heroes that you loved lived happily ever after … and then two hours later [they didn’t].”

But Jordan London admires the way that The Force Awakens subverts our ideas about happy endings.

“There’s definitely a trend in the stories that have been told in the last decade that take a look at villains from another perspective, or tell stories after they end,” she says. “Because life goes on and it’s not always happily ever after. And I think that says something about our society today, that we’re willing to see what happens after, and that it’s not always pretty.”

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Sails To $88M Weekend, New Records

Via USAtoday.com:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens started 2016 right where it left off in 2015 — total box office domination.

The seventh Star Wars cruised to a lopsided box office victory in the first, holiday weekend of 2016 with $88.3 million according to studio estimates, setting new records on a daily basis as it soared to $740 million total box office after just 19 days of release.

Over the holiday week The Force Awakens passed North American totals of massive previous hits including Titanic ($600.8 million), The Avengers ($623.4 million) and Jurassic World ($652.3 million) The next stop is the current record holder, Avatar ($760.5).

“The Force Awakens is picking off records one at a time as it explodes up the box office chart,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for Rentrak. “And it just barely missed setting the North American record this weekend by catching Avatar. It could do that tomorrow. The speed with which it has set all these records is unprecedented.”

The J.J. Abrams-directed film continued to set records at the global box office as it passed the $1.5 billion mark, making it the number six movie of all time internationally (passing Avengers: Age of Ultron at $1.4 billion)

With $1.510 billion total, The Force Awakens will pass Furious 7 ($1.514 billion) and Avengers ($1.519 billion) shortly to take the number four spot. Avatar sits at the top of the global list with $2.7 billion.

The dominance carried over to IMAX screens worldwide which accounted for a staggering $152 million in Star Wars box office, making The Force Awakens second all-time for the large screen format behind Avatar ($243 million total), which required 47 days to reach the $150 million mark.

Without any new releases following the glut of Christmas Day openings, there were plenty of other movies making noise — even they were drowned out by Star Wars.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s comedy Daddy’s Home managed a powerful second place run, taking $29 million over the weekend for an impressive total box office of $93.7 million.

“Surprisingly, Daddy’s Home is going to be one of the biggest hits of Will Ferrell’s career. No one expected that,” says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “It has turned into the big family comedy of the season.”

Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight took third place for the weekend with $16.24 million for a total of $29.6 million. The award-contending Western expanded nationally to 2,474 theaters from 100 locations.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s comedy Sisters took fourth place with $12.6 million for a total of $61.7 million. The family flick Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip pulled into fifth place with $11.8 million and $67.4 million total.

Final numbers are due Monday.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens To Pass Titanic As The Second-Biggest Domestic Movie Ever

Via Ew.com:

Today in how many box office records can Star Wars: The Force Awakens break, Disney reports that the new film will end 2015 with a domestic total of $652 million after only 13 days in theaters.

That makes The Force Awakens the second-biggest domestic movie of 2015 and the fourth-biggest of all time. Even more impressive: By the end of New Year’s Day, it will have passed both Jurassic World ($652.3 million) and Titanic ($658.7 million) to become the second-biggest domestic movie of all time. The Force Awakens is currently about $100 million shy of passing Avatar to become the highest-grossing domestic movie ever.

Internationally, The Force Awakens has pulled in $679.2 million for a worldwide total of $1.33 billion. The Force Awakens currently sits as the eighth-biggest movie of all time, and the fourth-biggest movie of 2015, behind Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Furious 7 ($1.52 billion), and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.41 billion).

This year’s box office total hit a record height of $11 billion, making 2015 the highest-earning domestic year in box office history.

On Thursday, The Force Awakens became the highest-grossing domestic Disney film of all time. Just a few days prior, it became the fastest movie ever to hit $1 billion worldwide, doing so just 12 days after its world premiere. Will China Like ‘Star Wars’ As Much As The Rest Of The World Does?

Via Foxnews.com:
The film opens in China on Jan. 9.

Director J.J. Abrams watched the Chinese premiere in Shanghai with a Chinese audience Sunday night. He told a news conference Monday that he was thrilled to see people “laughing and cheering in exactly the same places that we’ve seen other audiences.”

“It’s a testament to the power of cinema, that it does not matter where you’re from, you can get caught up in a story,” Abrams said.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took 12 days to earn $1 billion worldwide, becoming the fastest movie to achieve such a feat. The previous movie to reach $1 billion the fastest was “Jurassic World,” which did it in 13 days in June — and which had the benefit of record grosses in China.

“Star Wars” producer Kathleen Kennedy said the movie’s success to date was “a huge surprise.”

“We certainly hoped for enormous success but I think the fact that we crossed the billion-dollars … it’s almost so overwhelming it’s difficult to really process just what the response has been to the movie so far, and it hasn’t even opened here yet,” she said.

“Certainly we’re hoping and anticipating that it will play very very well here.”

The Chinese market has become increasingly important for Hollywood as revenues from movie theaters stagnate at home. Some movies have incorporated Chinese characters or stories to try to appeal to the Chinese movie-going audience.

Asked whether “Star Wars” movies would do the same in the future, Kennedy said they had just finished shooting “Rogue One,” the first stand alone “Star Wars” story. Hong Kong martial arts actor Donnie Yen and Chinese actor and director Jiang Wen have roles in it.

“They play wonderful characters and certainly there are many mythologies inside Chinese literature that I know we can explore in the future and find ways in which we can integrate some of those stories into the Star Wars universe,” said Kennedy.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Deleted Scenes

Via Slashfilm.com:

JJ Abrams‘ first cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was almost two hours and forty minutes in length. Lets be clear, that’s his first cut of the movie, not the assembly edit. The film was chopped down to 2 hours and 16 minutes for the final theatrical release, with a reported 20 minutes of scenes getting axed in the last month of editing alone. A dozen full scenes were left on the cutting room floor, not to mention snippets of scenes, moments of dialogue… etc. A lot of these scenes had near-complete visual effects, and some of the characters and moments removed can be seen in some of the merchandise and books. So what was left out of the final theatrical cut? Let’s try to find out.

Star Wars Just Made 2015 The Biggest Year In US box Office History

Via Theverge.com:

If there’s one thing that J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been great at — aside from reminding everyone how much they liked the original movie — it’s been breaking box office records. Lots of them. So it shouldn’t come as a shock that there’s another one rolling in just a few days before the end of the year: Star Wars has helped 2015 become the highest grossing year in US box office history. Deadline reports that North American box office totals for the year have topped $11 billion, with the tally estimated to hit $11.1 billion by the end of the year.

The previous record came in 2013, with movies like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the Frozen juggernaut helping drive over $10.9 billion in business. Along with Star Wars, a number of franchise films were responsible for the 2015 surge, including Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, and Furious 7. Still, nothing has performed quite like Star Wars, which as of Sunday stood at over $540 million domestic and over $1 billion worldwide.

Of course, with tickets prices escalating rapidly in recent years thanks to 3D, IMAX, and premium large format theaters, record grosses aren’t anywhere close to the same thing as record attendance. In fact, according to Box Office Mojo as of Sunday, 2015 has had one of the lowest number of tickets sold since 1996. While that total will certainly increase over the next few days it won’t be enough to change the fact that there are simply far fewer moviegoers in recent years than there were in the late 1990s and early 2000s — and that’s to say nothing of inflation itself. According to the same site, the top grossing domestic film of all time when adjusted for inflation is still 1939’s Gone with the Wind, with the original Star Wars snagging the second spot. On that adjusted scale The Force Awakens is currently 43rd, but with the film having been in theaters for less than two weeks it will have plenty of time to climb that ladder, no doubt setting more records along the way.

‘Star Wars’ Crosses $100 Million at Imax Theaters

Via variety.com:

The latest Star Wars movie broke the $1 billion mark before fans in China could see it, but producers anticipate “The Force Awakens” will play “very very well” in the world’s second-biggest film market.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has set another record, crossing the $100 million mark in worldwide grosses in a dozen days at Imax screens.

The performance by Disney’s space saga demolished the previous Imax record set by “Jurassic World,” which hit the $100 milestone in 18 days. The $106 million Imax total represents nearly 10% of the $1.09 billion worldwide haul for “The Force Awakens.”

The movie set Imax records on its opening weekend with $48 million — $30 million in the U.S. and $18 million internationally. During its second frame, the seventh “Star Wars” movie took in another $27.2 million at the worldwide box office, with $18.6 million from 391 domestic locations and $8.6 million from 282 international sites.

Imax noted that “The Force Awakens” reached $70 million domestically in 11 days, which was nearly three times faster than “Avatar,” which crossed that milestone in 30 days.

The film has reached $36.6 million in international grosses so far at Imax screens. It opens in China on Jan. 9.

The first Line Of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – An Insult To George Lucas?

Via Independent.co.uk:

There’s no doubt that Star Wars: The Force Awakens tried very hard to make up for the misstep that was the prequel trilogy, but did it go as far as taking an overt dig at creator George Lucas?

A Quora user seems to think so, drawing attention to the opening line of dialogue in the film from Max von Sydow:

‘This will begin to make things right.’

“Is that a dig against the awful prequels?” they asked, provoking quite a debate.

It’s unlikely director JJ Abrams would wish to insult Lucas, who attended the premiere of the sequel, and it would be a bit of an unnecessary swipe at the franchise in general.

That said, the line does, even accidentally or incidentally, set the tone for the film as a palate cleanser after the prequels.

While much of it (arguably too much) was taken up with honouring the series’ roots, Star Wars 8 looks to be a lot different.

Long-serving Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan said that in the hands of Looper writer/director Rian Johnson it willl be “some weird thing” and nothing like other Star Wars films that have come before it.

The film is due to arrive in 2017, with a spin-off movie called Rogue One centring around a Death Star heist filling the gap in 2016.
