STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT CANON IS ‘COMPLICATED’

Via Ign.com:

Earlier this year, when a book sleeve revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront would be considered canon, most of us assumed it would be the DICE-developed video game. Following Star Wars Celebration, it became clear that the novel, Star Wars: Battlefront – Twilight Company, set following A New Hope, would likely be the canonical entry for that particular brand. But this didn’t answer the major question on most of our minds: Is the Star Wars: Battlefront video game canon, and will it be considered in the future of films, TV, and other games?

“It’s complicated,” Patrick Bach, GM of DICE, told IGN.

Bach explained, “Canon is connected often to story. Is every battle you play out canon, or is this specific item canon? I can’t give you a clear answer on canon.” Because Star Wars: Battlefront does not have a campaign, its true storytelling opportunities are limited. It draws from the Original Trilogy alone, where A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi have already told the true stories of the universe. Cooperative missions take place in “iconic moments” from those films, and could presumably have static, canonical end points — destroying the shield generator on Hoth as the Imperials, disabling the Death Star’s shield on Endor, etc.

Battlefront honors the canon of Star Wars, but the unpredictable nature of competitive multiplayer in an online sandbox means there’s no way to make any match matter to the wider fiction. We never saw TIE Fighters taking down X-Wings in the Tatooine canyons, but DICE adheres explicitly to the Lucasfilm Archives’ original props and the aesthetic of the Original Trilogy. Furthermore, the developer can’t — and often chooses not to — deviate from expectation.

INTERPRETING STAR WARS ALIENS

Via Starwars.com:

”Many Bothans died to bring us this information.” — Mon Mothma

Some species within the Star Wars Legends material have changed considerably over time. One obvious reason for this is the lack of a visual representation in the original source. When a species is mentioned or described in a novel, the actual physical appearance may be open to interpretation. And although they are sometimes described in detail, sources that eventually portray them are usually not directly guided by the original author’s views. As such, they may vary from source to source. A good example of this variation is the krayt dragon, who changes significantly between different books. Most of the interpretations do not even match the only visible clue there is: the krayt dragon skull that’s seen in the Dune Sea scenes of Episode IV.

How Many Bothans?

Similarly, no one knew what a Bothan looked like when Mon Mothma mentioned them in Episode VI back in 1983. They would go largely unexplored until Timothy Zahn described them in his 1991 novel Heir to the Empire as being covered with a fine cream-colored fur. A year later, the Bothans would get their first ever image, in the Heir to the Empire Sourcebook. They looked somewhat human, but with quite a lot of hair. This image was not the most detailed one, but later books by West End Games fleshed out this look. Images of Bothan characters appeared in numerous sources, such as Wanted by Cracken in 1993, Cracken’s Rebel Operatives in 1994, and the 1996 Adventure Journal #10. The interpretation is often the same, a humanoid being, with a flat, broad nose, pointy ears and mane-like fur. From time to time the Bothans would almost resemble something from the early Planets of the Apes films. The comic adaptation of Shadows of the Empire also followed this look.

More SMS Audio ‘Star Wars’ Special Edition Headphones

Via Engadget.com:

Last year, when 50 Cent’s SMS Audio released a line of Star Wars-themed headphones, it was something for the fans. This year, 50’s riding on some good timing. With the movie trailer for The Force Awakens still lingering in many people’s retinas, SMS Audio is launching a second line of on-ear cans inspired by the franchise. This year it’s R2D2, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and the TIE Fighter that get immortalized as headphones (joining Rebel Alliance, Stormtrooper, Galactic Empire and Boba Fett models from 2014). There’s mention of passive noise canceling, as well as 40mm drivers to deliver the sound. Each pair costs $200 and will available sometime in Q2 this year — much less of a wait than for the next movie installment, at least.

Is This the Greatest (and Weirdest) Star Wars Photo Shoot of All Time?

Via Moviepilot.com:

Now, full disclosure: When it comes to Star Wars, my sheer, unadulterated love for the thing is both widely known and not especially well-managed. When it comes to that galaxy far, far away, I am completely biased, totally partisan, and borderline obsessed. Put simply: I love it way more than is strictly speaking sensible.

I tell you this, because when I say to you that what lies below is the greatest, weirdest, strangest, and most completely unhinged Star Wars related photo shoot that I’ve ever seen, it’s important that you know I really, really mean it.

What comes next, you see, isn’t just your run of the mill photo shoot to support the release of a new movie. This is Rolling Stone’s 1983 Summer Double Issue, with its extended Star Wars coverage.

DreamWorks Animation & Hasbro In Merger Talks; Deal With Hearst Looming

Via deadline.com:

EXCLUSIVE: DreamWorks Animation is deeply engaged in two potentially game changing negotiations that could transform the company — including one with Hasbro to forge a family entertainment powerhouse to be called DreamWorks-Hasbro. The other talks are with Hearst to turn DWA’s AwesomenessTV into a joint venture. We’re told that a DWA and Hasbro deal is at least 60 days off, if it happens. But the two companies are said to have agreed that Jeffrey Katzenberg would chair the combined operation. The Hasbro board visited the DWA campus recently, following a similar visit in late October by Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner and his management team to discuss potential film, TV, and consumer product synergies.

With an eye to combining and beneficially expanding the diversification that both companies have pursued of late, the DWA CEO is said to be looking for Hasbro to pay $35 a share in a potential deal. That would be a 56.5% premium over DWA’s closing price on Wednesday but a hair less than its 52-week high from January of $36.01.

Not that the animation company would reveal anything about any possible talks with anyone. “As a publicly traded company, we don’t comment on rumors and speculation,” a DWA spokesperson told Deadline today of any potential deal with either Hasbro or Hearst. Hasbro says that “as a matter of corporate policy we don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

Christopher Nolan Talks About Not Directing Star Wars 7

Via Yahoo.com:
Christopher Nolan has addressed whether or not he was ever approached or interested in directing ‘Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens’.

In an interview with The Daily Beast the director of ‘Interstellar’, said he would be “afraid to touch” such a huge franchise and said J.J. Abrams taking on the job took “colossal balls”

“I’m pretty excited to see what J.J. is going to do with that,” he said. “I’m excited to see that he’s shooting on film and actually built the Millennium Falcon. As far as whether or not I would have ever done it, the truth is I think I’d be afraid to touch it! He’s boldly going where he went before in Star Trek, and it takes colossal balls.”

It’s only natural that Nolan would be interested in Abrams’ practical effects and use of film stock, as these are filmmaking elements Nolan has championed for some time. He also champions the IMAX format, which is also part of Disney and Abrams’ ‘Star Wars 7’ plans.

“I’m a lot more comfortable trying to do my own thing than carrying the weight and expectation of the entire world – particularly 40-somethings like me who live and die with each new bit of information about ‘Star Wars’,” Nolan continued. “I’m very excited to see what he does.”

‘Star Wars’ was a big influence on the director, who in ‘Interstellar’ has released his first true sci-fi. ‘Inception’ could be classified as sci-fi if you really wanted it to be.

‘Interstellar’ is in cinemas now, ‘Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens’ will arrive on 18 December 2015.

“The Phantom Menace,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of The Jedi.” George Lucas is known for the over-the-top titles of his Star Wars films. In keeping with that tradition, the filmmakers recently announced the official title to the upcoming 7th Star Wars film, “The Force Awakens.”

This is no simple feat. Surely the filmmakers must have gone through several hundreds of possible title drafts before ending with “The Force Awakens.” Imagine what some of the rejected versions were.

Luckily the internet has it’s cultivated a list of nutty and unusual suggestions. Thanks to the hashtag#rejectedstarwarstitles, we put together some of the oddest and funniest. Which is your favorite?

Just Hours Left – Bid Now! Sideshow Collectibles Mike Nosco Auctions

Just a few hours left — Bid NOW!

Via Sideshowtoy.com:

Sideshow has been dedicated to supporting local charities for many years, most notably the Make-a-Wish Foundation. We’ve raised money via auctions for seriously ill kids who were looking for a bright moment in their otherwise difficult situation.

More recently, we’ve attempted to focus on smaller charities that serve our local community but often struggle with their fund raising. Many at Sideshow live and work here in the Conejo Valley of the greater Los Angeles area, and one of the unsung charities that has done amazing work in our community is the Mike Nosco Foundation, a registered 501c3 group.

Sideshow’s local community is a celebrated region for recreational cyclists, and for the past 5 years The Mike Nosco Memorial Ride has asked local riders to stretch their physical limits in a grueling 80 mile ride through the Santa Monica mountains for a very worthy cause. Each year a small group of Sideshow employees participate in the ride, but we’ve pledged to make an even bigger difference than simply our cycling efforts by holding this auction for one-of-a-kind items, artist proofs, prototypes, and more. Our goal is to help raise as much money as possible through the sale of these unique items and donate 100% of the proceeds to the Mike Nosco Foundation.

Sideshow is calling on the collecting community to consider bidding on these very special collectibles not just as an expression of your artistic interest or collecting taste, but also as a way of supporting worthy families in their time of need. As a company, and within our community, Sideshow has been blessed. But there are many around us that are significantly less fortunate. Helping a few of them out not only feels right, it is right. Join us today in making this auction a success.
